It is easier to believe a lie than to face a truth? To follow blindly a path laid out by others without questioning the direction, course or destination? Why is objectivity through education such a threat for so many? To spout, unthinkingly, inaccurate subjective propaganda and hail it as justification for closed-minded belief or action seems a crime to me.
My concern with media hype is long-term and increasingly justified …and the effects on the unthinking, blinkered masses is all too evident. People are BLIND to the ignorance that is being bred into - and encouraged! - by governments across the globe…a manipulation of the populus by the systematic degradation of education, removing with surgical skill the ability to see outside the pre-approved ‘box’ that we’re all forced - by society’s media-driven constraints - to live within.
I look outside the shop into the streets of our little inbred ville to see group-ettes of teens sweeping up and down with an air of superiority that only sublime ignorance can bestow. With each generation, the abilities to hypothesize, formulize and speculate are dying… they see no need to question the drivel that’s been fed into them from the moment they could sit upright in front of a television - or worse - a computer screen. Their parents are too ignorant or lazy to provoke debate and discussion about meaningful topics. The questions of politics, government, current events, history, literature and art are unknown in most homes and the saddest part of that is that NO ONE MISSES THEM!

I think I am just sick to the back teeth of having educational inadequates find me and my buddies and customers amusing because we watch sci-fi and read comics. Sorry - but, historically, science fiction has been written by scientists, historians, anthropologists and other genius types. It's generally entertaining and amusing - a great diversion from everyday mundane crap - whilst still being fairly cerebral, dealing with science, technology, social and political upheaval and projecting a series of concepts of a future world which all seem to be pretty relevant, thank you very much. Look at Doctor Who - so suddenly fashionable with those who would have stoned a Doctor Who fan to death just a few short years ago...some of the scripts (NOT including the vile conceptual abortion that was the sodding Daleks take Manhattan thing...) have been pure genius! Addressing serious issues like martial law, faith and religion, war, death, grief and loss, hope for redemption and so on and so forth.
And the Kyle phenomenon? weeeell.....he addresses the all important issues of whether Tracey-Chantelle's conjoined ghastly offspring belong to brother 1 or brother 2 or whether droolin' Jed will be able to give up his seventy-gallons-of-Cillit-Bang-a-day habit... and such like. "Ain't" that right Jeremy??? "Ain't" it? Huh? Huh? Foul prolapse of a man.
Sorry, but it’s true. Sci-fi is almost always written by genius-level men and women with a strong SOCIAL CONSCIENCE who deliberately challenge what people perceive as the norm. Big brother is conceived by manipulators who just want money. There’s a difference. And before you ask, I class George Lucas as the latter and Gene Roddenberry as the former. Thank you.

And how about comics - well - that’s a whole new rant all in itself there. But briefly - ANYONE who says comics are for kids, that comic art is not REAL art or that comics have nothing important to say, should be shot in the face. Twice. For the sake of the preservation of hope for the future of all mankind. If you don’t GET why, then perhaps you should scramble together the two or three semi-functioning brain cells you have remaining and look up the social, political and artistic relevance of comic art and literature over the years. Comics do not start and end with X-Men (although there’s a fascinating dynamic there, is Xavier the new Hitler? Mengeler?). My life was enhanced the day I was handed Vertigo comics, then small press graphic novels, then extreme independents. Read more, learn more, see more, appreciate more. You cannot REDUCE or LIMIT your enjoyment of life through learning - you can only grow and develop, revel in and savour the delights of new experiences.
For fuck's sake - I know I watch some shite on TV, but at least I KNOW that's what it is!! I'll watch crap movies cos they're just awesome fun, but my tastes are wide and varied. So should yours be!
Why is the enjoyment of fantasy through comics and literature, sci-fi and art so threatening? Simply because those who mock and jeer are ignorant of the origins and consciousness expanding qualities.. Yes - art and literature are like a drug - and a bloody good one! Learning to move beyond what is socially acceptable to the more challenging world beyond will only serve to enhance your life. For the sake of the positive development of humanity - STOP accepting the drivel you are fed with all these quiz shows and reality series. Try something new! The more you sit blindly watching ONLY what the government and media choose to select as POPULAR, the more you limit your potential. Go to the theatre once in a while, for fuck’s sake….. Take in a play - a musical - anything! Just STOP watching Big Brother! Ban that bastard Kyle man from your house! If you're going to watch crap like that then at least recognise it for the drivel that it is and don't assume that Kyle does anything other than manipulate (poorly) the silt of the planet for ratings... Choose carefully what you watch and try and look beyond the obvious - see more that the veneer. Enjoy a tv show as the START of something - a conversation, a thought, a reason to research something, begin a new hobby - ANYTHING.
Look - this is a marathon rant for me to have all in one go and there are so many aspects to it that it would take a lifetime for me to get through them - but this is a start. I am SICK of ignorance, closed-mindedness, bigotry, racism, religious pomposity, and SICK of the moronic trash that roam the streets, brimming with hatred - and resentment not born of enlightenment or self-discovery, but rather from ignorant, mindless stupidity. Surely the human race can achieve more than this? Are we condemned to a bleak and dismal future, led - lobotomised - by the equally ignorant but greedy, moneyed overseers?
The truth is only threatening to those who have a reason to hide it from us.
